wpg summer interns head back to school after a rewarding summer

This summer, wpg welcomed six interns to learn the ins and outs of specific departments, wpg, and the retail real estate industry as a whole. They worked at wpg’s headquarters in Columbus, Ohio and had a chance to visit nearby properties as well.

The members of the 2024 intern class worked with several departments including Leasing, Information Services, Property Management and Accounting. They received hands-on experience by working on projects including assessing potential leasing opportunities, evaluating tenant suitability, updating leasing records, researching energy variance across the portfolio, creating Back-to-School marketing campaigns and planning for Santa visits.

During weekly lunch and learns, our executive leaders talked with the interns about the retail real estate business and answered their questions.

The interns, along with Dan Scott, Senior Vice President, Head of Development and Erich Stehle, Senior Vice President, Construction, visited The Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, Ohio. They saw firsthand the progress on a development project for Dick’s House of Sport, which is being built at The Mall at Fairfield Commons and slated to open later this year.

At the start of the summer, the interns were tasked with a case study on the potential risks and challenges facing retail real estate investments. They worked together to study the risks and came up with mitigation strategies. During the last week of the internship program, the group presented their findings to the senior leadership team.

Overall, the interns found the connections they made at wpg this summer, both professionally and personally, to be the most rewarding part of their experiences.

Here’s what a few of the interns had to say:

“There was never a day I wasn’t excited to come into the office and learn from everyone around me.”

Natalie Scott, Property Management intern

“I was surprised by how quickly I could see the tangible impact of my contributions.”

Alexa Spano, Specialty Leasing intern

“I was able to learn life skills that I can apply both once I return to school and when I join the workforce post grad.”

Anastasia Stanhope, Accounting intern

We’re excited to see these students succeed wherever they land after graduation!
