wpg recognizes domestic violence awareness month with giveback initiative

In support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, wpg’s colleagues gave back in a variety of ways to support community-based domestic violence prevention and victim service organizations.

Colleagues at the corporate office in Columbus, Ohio, partnered with Seeds of Caring to assemble 100 care kits for LSS Choices, the only domestic violence shelter in Franklin County, Ohio. Choices provides a safe space and 24-hour crisis and information hotline, as well as counseling services and support groups to victims of domestic abuse. Colleagues decorated canvas bags with encouraging messages and then packed the kits with self-care items most requested by people staying at Choices’ shelter, including ear pods, phone chargers, lotion, ChapStick and more. The kits also included journals with motivational writing prompts.

Meanwhile, property teams gave back to local organizations in their own way.

  • The team at Gateway Mall in Lincoln, Nebraska, put together kits containing hygiene products such as razors, soap, shampoo and conditioner and more to donate to The People’s City Mission. The organization said the donation couldn’t have come at a better time.
  • Town Center at Aurora in Aurora, Colorado partnered with Second Chance Aurora to assemble 100 self-care and hygiene bags for those in need.

First observed in 1981, Domestic Violence Awareness Month unites advocates in their efforts to end domestic violence. Across the country, communities and advocacy organizations prioritize building awareness of signs of abuse, providing resources to victims and policymakers and sharing survivor stories. Although there has been substantial progress in reducing domestic violence, one in three women and one in four men have been physically abused by an intimate partner.

We’re thankful to all colleagues who participated in events throughout October. To learn more about wpg’s give back efforts and community support, visit our community page.
